C Category Flight Instructor Course

Learn To Fly NZ offers a dedicated C Category Flight Instructor course over the winter months, designed to help you start your professional aviation career by training the next generation of pilots.
As a C Category Flight Instructor, you’ll teach trainee pilots under the supervision of experienced instructors who will guide you in developing your teaching skills and confidence. This qualification is an essential step for pilots looking to build hours and expertise in the aviation industry.
C Category Flight Instructor COURSE
Entry requirements and pathway
To enrol in the C Category Instructor course, you must hold a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL). If you don’t have your CPL yet, Learn To Fly NZ also provides comprehensive CPL training to get you ready.
Medical requirements
You will need a current Class 1 Medical Certificate to act as a flight instructor. If your medical certificate is expired or due for renewal, we can provide a list of approved medical examiners in the local area to assist with the process.
What you will learn
During the course, you will develop key instructional skills, including:
- Conducting pre-flight briefings
- Teaching the Principles of Flight
- Delivering effective in-flight instruction
You will complete 25 hours of dual training under the guidance of our experienced B Category Flight Instructors and complete an Instructor Techniques course. (For more details, see the CAA NZ website).
C Category Flight Instructor COURSE
Minimum flight hour requirements
To qualify for your C Category Flight Instructor rating, you must meet the following minimum flight experience:
- 200 hours Total Flight Time
- 150 hours as Pilot in Command
- 40 hours Cross-Country Navigation Flight Time, including at least one flight of 300 nautical miles with two full-stop landings at intermediate points
- 5 hours Instrument Flight Time, including at least 10 hours instrument flight time in aeroplanes
- 1 hour dual instruction in spin recovery, certified competent in this exercise
- 25 hours of Instructor Training
